Marijuana clones have been around for as long as there have been marijuana plants grown by humans. Not with just marijuana plants, but people have been cloning plants for decades to get exact copies of plants and flowers that have great characteristics.

Marijuana clones are typically cut from a large "mother plant" that is kept in the vegetative stage of growth in order to produce as many small cuttings as possible. These small cuttings, typically about 4-6" tall, are sliced carefully with a razor from the mother plants outer branches. Then, each cutting is dipped in a rooting solution to help stimulate root production from the cutting.

Once the cutting is dipped in the proper rooting gel, it is typically set into a small 2 inch by 2 inch rockwool cube where it will sit for around 2-3 weeks, developing thick, white roots. Once the root base has developed and the plant is growing in a healthy way, it can be transplanted into a larger pot of soil to continue its growth.

The cloning method is great for cannabis growers that want to get identical copies of a valuable strain. Fro example, instead of buying 100 seeds with mixed results, you can buy just 10 seeds and easily take 10 clones from each plant during the vegetative stage for less money and better results.

There are benefits of seeds though. Cannabis seeds develop a strong taproot that will be particularly helpful in outdoor growing environments where wind can push on plants to the point of breakage. However, if you're growing indoors, clones should be fine. They won't experience high winds or other harsh elements that the taproot is most helpful for.

Pests are another concern with clones, as opposed to seeds. It is true that clones can come with pests on them already, but if you buy from a reliable source it shouldn't be an issue. Most professional clone producers keep their facilities extremely clean and sterile, minimizing the chances of the plants you bought coming with some nasty spider mites or other unwanted, crop endangering bugs.
